The EPA states that today, Non-Point Source Pollution (NPS) remains the Nation's largest source of water quality problems. It's the main reason that approximately 40 percent of our surveyed rivers, lakes, and estuaries are not clean enough to meet basic uses such as fishing or swimming, nor drinking. Fresh water sources can be contaminated with waterborne pathogens like bacteria, viruses, parasites; and other contaminants such as pesticides, industrial chemicals, hazardous waste, pharmaceuticals, and heavy metals.
Non-point Source Pollution occurs when rainfall, snowmelt, or irrigation runs over land or through the ground, picks up pollutants, and deposits them into rivers, lakes, and coastal waters or introduces them into ground water. You never know what might be upstream from you or your campsite; or lurking in drinking water when you are traveling abroad. Pastures and farming fields indirectly contaminate fresh water as runoff can carry bacteria from animal waste and agricultural chemicals into fresh water sources; many foreign countries have raw sewage treatment issues. Even clear, odorless water can harbor contaminants.
Many water treatment & filtration products will reduce some micro-organisms. But, if water quality is very questionable, alone, they may not effectively remove waterborne pathogens, and most likely not agricultural and industrial chemicals or heavy metals which can pose serious health threats.
